Relaxing in the heated Cave of Warmth, Bambi lays her head on the soft dirt floor. She is weary from the day's delights and playing, and is now resting by herself, perfectly content.
Bambi gazes into the blazing fire. Its fiery sparks dance in her chocolate-brown eyes. This fire spreads heat through the Cave of Warmth, and so she is grateful for it.
Bambi hasn't feared fire since the incident with her father, for there has never been a reason to. Then a thought crashes down onto her young mind. Fire is a gift of nature, she realizes suddenly. The fire has burned since she can remember, and she not only believes, but knows, from a part of her deep down in her very being, that it will burn forever.

Renton was passing by the Cave of Warmth until he noticed a glow coming from inside it. He grew puzzled by the glow and went up to the entrance to peek inside. There he saw Bambi resting inside the entrance and a fire burning nearby. He was taken aback a little when he saw the fire at first, for he had seen fire cause destruction before when he was a young fawn, but never had he seen it act so calm and not spreading everywhere, causing harm to everything it would touch. He instead gazed at the fire and went up close to take a good look at it. The heat from the fire felt very good to him, and he became mesmerized by the dancing sparks that came from the flames, so he decided to stay a while and sit near Bambi to watch the fire continue its perpetual glow.

Bambi had been so deeply entranced by the beautiful, warm flames that seemed linked together in a flowing dance that she hadn't realized Renton come in. Then she looked up, not startled at all, for she was used to this now.
Bambi smiled, letting the warmth and wonder that she was feeling physically blossom into her face. She let the overflowing love she was feeling pour out of her eyes into Renton's.
Bambi didn't need to talk. She just felt Renton's body heat pour into her as he sat next to her. She nuzzled him, perfectly happy.

Renton felt the nuzzle coming from Bambi, and he smiled back. Then he continued to watch the fiery sparks dance ever so freely for a while.
Then he thought of something and asked the little fawn, "Bambi...do you know why this fire burns the way it is? I mean, I've seen fire cause death and destruction to the forests I've been in before, yet this fire seems to stay in place and act very gentle and peaceful. Why do you think it does so?"

Bambi frowned. She felt a tint of frustration at being asked a question she had searched the answer to for so long. Then she let the irritation melt away, shook her head and smiled at Renton.
"I don't know," she said. "Me and all the other animals - here in the Eirest Green, I mean - we've been wondering that for a long, long time. I mean as long as I've been here. Some people say it's magic. Some people say it's controlled by the air. And.... some people say it's the way it... grows.." Bambi shrugged.
"I don't see how it can necessarily grow, I mean it's not alive. Is it? It's not alive, isn't it, I mean it can't be...?"

"Hmmm...fire being alive?" Renton looked at the fire and studied it for a few moments. "Well, it does seem to move by itself, but then again, it doesn't seem to need food like we do to live and thrive, though..." He felt sort of perplexed about fire and what it is exactly. "Wow, fire sure can be a mysterious thing to understand." Then he watched the fire to think about it for a moment and then said to Bambi, "At least this fire seems comforting and warm, as long as we're being careful with it."
