Renton looked at Bambi, noticing how frightened she was from the thunderclaps. Then he remembered something that his mother taught him from long ago, and he said to Bambi reassuringly, "Aw, there's no need to worry too much on the loud booms. My mother had taught me that if you count how long the boom occurs after the big flash, the longer the time it takes, the farther away the strike is. With this method, you could prepare yourself better before the loud boom arrives. I know it sounds sort of strange, but it seems to work pretty well."

Bambi looked at Renton, surprised. "Really?" she asked. "So if that's true, then if I see lightning flash, and I hear thunder - I mean, loud booms - maybe about 10 seconds after that, the strike is a long way away??"

Bambi lit up.

Renton nodded his head and said, "Exactly. Let me show you what I mean." Then he looked out into the forest to wait for a lightning flash to occur. Once one did, he silently counted in his head to wait for the thunder to approach. 1...2...3...4...5... Then a low and gentle rumble came. He looked over to Bambi and said, "You see? It's that simple. Now you don't need to feel all that scared, though you might need to brace yourself should the flash be very bright and very close."
